Kite Cottage

A bright and sociable family home

I was approached by the owner of Kite Cottage with only two items on her wish list: Lots of light and a booth style dining space.

Kite Cottage is an end of terrace Cotswold cottage that was consolidated from 2 separate cottages. Over the years previous owners had adapted it to their needs which resulted in a lean-to utility room with a raised floor level bolted onto the back of the house, taking away light, views and a connection into the garden from the main living space. The property had substantial outbuildings set away from the house.

Since the main living room was already of a good size and proportion, I proposed the demolition of the lean to and insertion of a set of French doors to connect the living room with the garden. A small extension connects the kitchen with the outbuildings. Designed at an angle to the main house, it creates a light area for a booth style dining space which connect directly with the kitchen and the garden. A new boot room connects the extended kitchen with the outbuilding which will be partly converted into a cloak room and utility.

Both the cottage and the outbuilding are built in Cotswold Stone. The new connecting extension will be a contemporary lightweight super insulated larch clad structure to celebrate the new against the old. Curved corners will soften the impact of the new extension. Internally exposed timber rafters will direct the eye towards the garden whilst a narrow roof light at the junction with the existing property will deliver more light to the kitchen.
